Is it safe to put Bonjela in your vagina or on your vulva?

Today in questions we never thought we’d ask: is it okay to put Bonjela on your vulva?

It’s a question we didn’t think we needed to answer, but over on Mumsnet, someone’s asking it.

One mum took to the forum to ask if it’s okay to rub Bonjela – the teething and ulcer gel – on her ‘fanjo’ (meaning vagina) to numb a pea sized lump on her vulva so she could ‘lance and squeeze the bugger’.

‘Tried yesterday and it was so eye wateringly painful but I only got a bit of clear watery stuff out,’ she wrote. ‘There’s obviously more to it.

‘Bonjela’s ok in the mouth so it’ll be ok down there yes?’

She went on to specify that she only wanted to apply a tiny blob on the ‘inner lip’, despite alarmed reactions from fellow Mumsnetters.

And she did end up using the Bonjela, reporting that applying it to the spot on her labia stung quite a bit before going ‘numbish’, allowing her to push a needle in it for ‘aaaages just squeezing and squeezing.’

‘Loads of watery stuff came out,’ she wrote. ‘THEN finally a bit of white stuff. Just a bit. No explosion or anything sadly though.

‘Not sure if there’s more in there. Started to bleed a bit so I feel I should leave it tonight.’

The next morning the brave Bonjela user said the spot was sore, but not as sore as it was before squeezing. The spot also looked ‘weirdly jelly like’, and the lump remained – flattened and half the size it was, but still there.

Overall, she was a fan of the Bonjela trick.

But is it actually safe? And will Bonjela actually help us to deal with bumps, spots, and lumps on our vulva?

Shazia Malik, consultant obstetrician & gynaecologist told metro.co.uk that yes, Bonjela on skin is safe – but only when used externally.

So it will work to numb the outer labia or the parts around the vagina, but it absolutely should not applied inside the vagina, as this will disrupt the vagina’s delicate pH balance.

But just because you can put Bonjela on your bits doesn’t mean you should.

What appears to be a lump or spot can be one of many things. It could be a Bartholin’s cyst; a small fluid-filled sac near the opening of the vagina.

In the case of a Bartholin’s cyst that’s causing pain or discomfort, it’s important not to try to pop or squeeze it out yourself. It needs to be checked by a doctor, who can determine if the lump you’re feeling is a Bartholin’s cyst or something more worrying.

They’ll likely recommend treatment such as using a hot compress or having a bath to draw out the fluid, or having the cyst drained.

Any drainage of cysts or spots needs to be done in a sterile environment to avoid infection, so this needs to be done by a doctor. That means you really shouldn’t squat on your bathroom floor and poke and prod your vag for hours.

It’s also worth keeping an eye out for lump and bump related changes.

‘If a lump is getting bigger, changing colour, bleeding, not going away then it’s always best to get it checked out,’ explains Shazia. ‘Skin on any part of the body can get cancer so lumps shouldn’t be ignored.’

Essentially, if you’ve felt a bump – painful or otherwise – and you’re not sure what it is, you really shouldn’t go straight ahead with trying to get rid of it yourself.

You could end up making things worse, ignoring a bigger issue, or giving yourself an infection.

If it’s not an ingrown hair you can easily remove, or a pimple that disappears on its own after a few days, talk to your GP or a gynaecologist. Even if it’s nothing to worry about, having your vagina checked out by a professional will do a great deal to put you at ease.
